In May 2006, newly promoted Associate Professor of Economics David Sharpe resigns from USM to take an industry job. This is a crippling blow to the economics fiefdom carefully constructed over fifty years by the likes of Joseph Greene, Ty Black, George Carter, Charles Sawyer, and Farhang Niroomand. Having just lost Assistant Professors Sunny Wong and Melody Lo from the Hattiesburg faculty, Sharpe’s departure leaves economics short 3 members overall. Lo and Wong’s departures were expected, however, and Sawyer and Carter were able to make two hires – Akbar Marvasti and Sami Dakhlia – but were denied the opportunity to hire a replacement for Sharpe, even on a Visiting basis...".

(December 13, 2006) 8-Dec-06 CoB Meeting News Bytes "... CoB Dean Harold Doty has completed work on the first 4 of the 5 AACSB Strategic Management Standards. Doty told the CoB that he is delaying completion of the 5th as a way to leverage more money from USM Provost Jay Grimes.

Commentary: Is AACSB important, or not? When Grimes hears he’s being used (again) by Doty in this way, it’ll be hard for him (Grimes) to believe itis important. And, he’ll (Grimes) be right in thinking so...".

(January 9, 2006) Another Doty Scam Uncovered: Economics Hiring 2007 "Previous reports at www.usmpride.com uncovered the strong connections among Harold Doty, Susan Doty, the Mississippi Council on Economic Education (MCEE), the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at USM (BBER), and the Center for Economic Education at USM (CEE). He has the gall to stand in front of CoB faculty, as he did in December of 2006, and critically remark that former CBA Dean Joseph Greene’s standard for raises was “who had the children last.” It takes gall to make such a statement when one’s own standard seems to be “who has the biggest mortgage” or “who has the most expensive lifestyle.” Doty’s CoB is far from a meritocracy. In fact, Greene’s college may have been more like a meritocracy than Doty’s, now that USM has ushered in the research focus that was not part of Greene’s world...".

(January 18, 2006) What Will Doty “SAIS” Now? "The CoB was told that Dr. Stan Lewis was hired for one year as Interim Director of SAIS (School of Accountancy and Information Systems). During that year, despite it being the same year as final preparation for and visitation by an AACSB re-accreditation team, Doty would initialize and Barry Babin, Chairman of Marketing and Management, would lead a nationwide search for the new SAIS Director. (January 23, 2007) Trust ... and Doty "Billy Joel wrote and sang about it (A Matter of Trust, Joelsongs and Sony Music, BMI, 1986), many others have discussed it, and everyone has experienced trust and distrust, and now Management guru Stephen M. R. Covey covers it in his book The Speed of Trust – The One Thing That Changes Everything. This is frighteningly relevant to the CoB. Covey opines thatwhen trust is low, the speed of business is low and the cost is high, but when trust is high, the speed is high and the cost is low. Doesn’t that make sense? You ignored the rules and evidence and reason. You have demonstrated that you should not participate in this matter at all. Given the extraordinary animosity you have displayed toward me and the malicious, punitive conduct directed at me, you should not participate in the resolution of the appeals and grievances in any way whatsoever. Had you taken initiative to correct the problems you created without being required to do so, you might have reason to participate in the process of resolving the appeals and grievances. For whatever reason, you do not have the leadership or impartiality to signal that you had overcome your bias. We don’t need to compound the problems you created with cause for further appeals and grievances. ..".

(January 30, 2007) The CoB's Cut-and-Paste Culture by Duane Cobb I don't know when it began, and it's probably been around for a while, but I’m almost certain that the CoB’s cut-and-paste culture has never been as ingrained as it is today. This website has been reporting on it for almost six months-long before the Dr. Cut-and-Paste column appeared here recently. Although that column referenced EFIB Chair George Carter's use of a job opening advertisement template, one created by another EFIB faculty, to prepare for a job search, CoB Dean Harold Doty is usually at the center of the cut-andpaste culture.
